Here at Rutgers, we are nearly over with midterms. However, I feel like I am just beginning my 4 year college career all over again. Ive been working on fixing my HTML page for web authoring, starting my paper for History of Photography and managing the idea and production of making new photographs. Meanwhile, I still need to create a portfolio for #latelastnight to try and become a part of the photo team. I am honestly more interested in my images for the BFA, BA annual show: Systems. I did not want to approach the show theme with the literal but rather with something that works a system when paired with something else. I have been exploring the ideas of sex and sexuality and the intimate moments of sex. Ideally I wanted the images to be somewhat abstract so that the viewer may not immediately know what the image shows. Here are two photos that I am highly attracted to that I created this week. One is inverted and edited within Adobe Photoshop CS6 and the other is simply scanned and given layers and curves not being inverted.

Fridays Boredom
Fridays are always hard for me. I look forward to Fridays as soon as Sunday comes around, but I am trapped by boredom. My senior thesis class meets on fridays, (most days), and it is usually a quick class so far. Today for example, we got out nearly 3 hours before the end of class time. I simply came home, made the breakfast I had been thinking about and went to sleep. For 4 hours. Can't really consider that a nap huh? Now that I'm awake I am dying of BOREDOM! I am usually not in New Brunswick during the weekends but until I get picked up by someone I am stuck here. I should work on my HTML homework but I actually somewhat understand it now so I am going to save it for tomorrow's boredom. I keep thinking of loading film into my 4x5 holders now that I have about 7 of them. That's a whole 14 photos I can take if anyone was wondering, which I am actually excited about. I just cannot seem to motivate myself in my apartment. I've learned since this summer that I need to be constantly entertained or moving. I usually work all the time and now that I do not have a steady job I have a whole lot of downtime. Its making me crazy, causing boredom!

Thinking vs Doing
I need to spend a lot of time figuring out the perfect exposure for my images. Only problem; 4x5 camera. Its so large that I can not casually take a photo. Over the summer I found an artist and images that I would love for my photographs to look like in terms of exposure and lighting. I've been trying to recreate the darks and light parts of the image. I wonder if they were shot in digital and turned into black and white or originally shot in film. Here are some of the links.

Working Photographs
Last wednesday I started workimg on developimg and editing my photographs I took as testers. I wamted to explore the exposure times I would need for my images to show during a night exposure. My first photographs were taken with a small desk light in my bedroom at and f stop of 11. The exposure times started at a t-time of 8 seconds and decended down to a 4. My photograph that was taken of myself sleeping was done at a f-stop of 11 and had been exposed for 8 hours. The photographs that were taken with the light came out to be too light. some of the image did however show on each sheet of film, the 8 second film however had more details. My photograph that had been exposed for 8 hours came out to be too dense. The image did appear but it took a lot of editing to make the image look somewhat presentable. The photographs have been edited and saved to my externel hard drive. The hard drive however crashed on wednesday as I was editing so I am working on getting it working again. When I have access to the images they will be posted.

Misc Rants.
1. My Web Authoring class is extremely difficult. I dont know what to do about it. I need a HTML/CSS and Javascript tutor asap. I need to get this knowledge down. I refuse to fail in learning how to create webpages!!!
2. Love my apartment and roommates. Its so perfect, it's like you find the 5 most random people who looks as if they should never live together and put them in the same area. Turns out we are all pretty much similar in life views and interests!! Jeff is already like a big brother <3
3. Started working on my Photo/Thesis project. Good thing I knew what I wanted to do before I started my SENIOR YEARRRRRRR!!!! Now it is time for taking a shit ton of images and working through problems to make it look exactly like my vision. My Photo professor says I spend too much time planning and not enough time shooting. My images are always strong and the themes are always impressive but they would be even better if I shoot and not plan so much. CHALLENGE AACCEPTED.
4. Missing the shit out of all my friends. about to start sending hella gifts out.

My day with Theresa Francisco.
-At the beginning of our night meeting in my apartment, we explored each others works from our time here at Rutgers. There were not any initial questions prepared, however, it did not take long for each of us to become very comfortable with each other. This is what happend.
M: When and how did you come to start doing art?
T: I use to ride horses for about 10 years and that was what I would do to relax. I unfortunately got into an accident unrelated to riding, but resulted in me not being able to ride anymore. I started to fill my time drawing and painting, and it became my new way of relaxing. I discovered that I was actually good and enjoyed doing it as well.
M: Did you enter Rutgers as a painter?
T: No, actually entering Rutgers, I had not decided what my area of concentration would be. I continued practicing drawing and painting but discovered sculpture as well.
M: When making work, is there a certain theme that you like to focus on?
T: Not necessarily, most of my works come from a personal place. I use a lot of my secrets, friends’ secrets, stories and situations I encounter on a daily basis throughout my work. One of my recurring themes however is color. I like playing with color in people confusing or adding context with color. Making you think of stereotypes or laughing at the idea of color being crucial or important to the scene but it is really at random.
M: When talking and looking at your work, it seems that many of your life situations are displayed in your paintings while other ideas are explored within your sculpture. Can you elaborate on that?
T: When it comes to painting, it is something that I need to constantly do. I always have something that I need to tell and get off of my chest. Once the idea has been completed I can put it away satisfied that I have tackled it to the best of my ability. Painting is something that I need to do, while sculpture is not something I need to do. Sculpture is so stressful at times.
M: I would think that something you spend so much personal time with would be relaxing rather than stressful.
T: For sculpture there is so much time and energy spent into making a piece. You have to think of an idea, gather supplies, plan your work, re-evaluate and change ideas all before you start to make your work. Sculpture is so solid compared to painting to where it comes to the point where I ask myself "does this need to be done?" For painting I tend to work very fast in the ideas. I tend to want to make my entire scenes urgent.
M: You asked me about titling my own works; do you title your works?
T: Yes I do. I feel that many of my works need to have something to further explain my thought process at times. I reference very intimate situations and serious situations so I make my titles playful. It makes serious matters seem funny.
M: Can you describe your thoughts into making your piece with the legs and iron.
T: I wanted to work with the reference of the American Flag and women. She is sitting sewing the flag and it is pretty large. Through her legs there is a printer and it is printing a lot of political ideas and thoughts that are bullshit. There is also an iron that has needles coming out making it incapable of being used. It is essentially making a stab at the political system to where there are inabilities to iron out and solve our issues because the women is sewing more than what we can handle.
M: What do you plan on doing after graduating from Rutgers?
T: I want to do whatever it is that will keep me making art. Moving to Brooklyn and getting a job and apartment with friends or other artists would be cool. I’ve worked in many different environments within the art world so my resume is pretty open.
